Book Review: The Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison

Book Rating

Book Review

Wow, The Silent Wife is definitely worth the read! Harrison truly built a web of complex emotions and storytelling and drew me in. I finished this within hours and couldn’t put it away!

I can’t wait to see how they adapt this to film. I read that Nicole Kidman will be playing Jodie in The Silent Wife and I’m honestly so excited to see that. The book is told from both sides, His and Hers, and every time it was “her” side, I pictured Nicole Kidman. That was an epic cast pick.

This book dove in to a complex, non-traditional “marriage”. I must admit, the title The Silent Wife confused me for a while because they weren’t truly married. Jodi is a cunning therapist who is a very domesticated life partner. Todd is her “husband”, who’s brain is quite literally in his pants for most of this book. It was interesting to read some of the quotes Harrison had in there about life, marriage, relationships, and men. The overall sentiment being that all men cheat, one way or another, and none can truly be trusted. The idea of cheating, in this book, was putting something–anything–before your significant other.

Jodi always got her revenge though…or did she? I love the questions you are left with as a reader when you finish this book. These questions add to the appeal of the book, and to the intensity of the characters. The ending brings out what each character values and believes. Is it the next Gone Girl, as all of the advertisements for this book imply? No, I don’t think so. I do not like the comparison of one book to another, as The Silent Wife’s story is completely different than Gone Girl, although there are undoubtedly some comparisons that could be made.

I rated this down one star simply because the “twist that will take your breath away” did not take my breath away at all. In fact, I knew what the twist would be long before I got there, but that didn’t take away from the story. It still enraptured me from the very beginning. If you’re looking for a good read that will leave your head spinning, definitely go read The Silent Wife!

  1. great review, Amy! I felt almost exactly the same way about this book!
